James Waggoner was a free black man, living and working in Cincinnati in 1859. On a fateful day in August of that year he was kidnapped by two men with plans to sell him into slavery in Kentucky. No one believed his declarations that he was a free man, but there was enough information to question his kidnappers claims that he was a runaway slave, that James wound up in the Newport Jail. He languished there for 12 months as his case was brought to trial.
In this well-researched account, the author follows that compelling story from the kidnapping to the resolution and gives us some insight into the disheartening conditions and treatment of the African-American community in the period just before the onset of the U.S. Civil War.
