Operating our Research Library and Museum Center and maintaining our ever-growing collections requires expenditures to properly store, display and share these items with our membership and others.
We can only do this through the support of our membership and the community at large. As a non-taxing entity, we depend solely on income from memberships, merchandise sales and donations to fulfill our mission. We are an all-volunteer organization, so we don’t have to support expensive salaries or beach house. Every penny of your donation goes to maintain, enhance, and grow our collections.
Types of Donations:
Cash Donation
Cash donations of any amount are always accepted and greatly appreciated. Donations can be made for the general operation of the Society or you can specify that the donation be used only for a specific purpose. Remember to check to see if your employer offers a gift matching program.
Building Fund Donation
We have outgrown our existing space on the second floor of the Alexandria Courthouse and are aggressively seeking a larger, more accessible space to house our collections. If you would like to help us in this endeavor, please mark your donation accordingly.
Essay Contest Donation
Fund For the last 13 years we have sponsored the Frank Steely Memorial Essay Contest for students in Middle School and High School. We award cash prizes to the winning essays. If you would like to help support this project, please mark your donation as such.
Matching Funds
Some employers off a gift matching program to encourage their employees to donate to charitable non-profits. Check with your employer to see if they offer such a program.

Personal Property
You can transfer valuable artwork, antiques or other personal property to the Historical Society. The Society will determine if it is best to use the property to further our purposes or to sell the property and use the proceeds. In all likelihood, you will receive an income tax deduction for the fair market value of the property and pay no capital gains on the transfer. Check with your attorney or financial advisor for information about the effect on your personal situation.
Stocks
You can transfer appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual fund shares you have owned for more than one year to the Historical Society. We will sell your securities and use the proceeds for our programs. According to the website, Fidelity Charitable (fidelitycharitable.org), any long-term appreciated securities with unrealized gains (meaning they were purchased over a year ago, and have a current value greater than their original cost) may be donated to the Historical Society and a tax deduction taken for the full fair market value of the securities-up to 30% of the donor’s adjusted gross income. Since the securities are donated rather than sold, capital gains taxes from selling the securities no longer apply. The more appreciation the securities have, the greater the tax savings will be. Check with your attorney or financial advisor for information about the effect on your personal situation.
